Sustainability
Sustainability is embedded into the day-to-day operation of Clare Country Club, alongside a commitment to supporting the Clare Valley community and regional tourism economy. The focus is on reducing waste, improving energy and water efficiency, and using local suppliers wherever practical. Protecting the natural beauty of the Clare Valley matters, and it’s an ongoing journey, with practical improvements continually identified across accommodation, food and beverage, and guest services.
Here’s a look at what’s been introduced so far.
Amenities
Single-use plastics have been eliminated across guest rooms and dining areas, with items like plastic toothbrushes, combs, shower caps and cutlery removed. Larger-format plastics have also been replaced with eco-friendly pump dispensers throughout the hotel, cutting down on single-use bottles and packaging waste.
Waste Management
Waste is managed responsibly across the property. In-room recycling starts with dual-compartment bins, then waste is sorted further into co-mingled recycling, cardboard, bottles and cans, with glass recycled for re-manufacturing. In the kitchen, food waste is controlled through careful purchasing, stock rotation, portion control and menu planning, with progress tracked through monthly reporting. Takeaway packaging has moved to wooden utensils and cardboard cups, and supplies arrive via bulk deliveries to cut transport emissions.
Sustainable Housekeeping
Guests can support these efforts through responsible linen and towel use, and can opt in to having their room serviced. This reduces unnecessary laundering, along with the water, energy and cleaning chemicals that go with it. Housekeeping also focuses on using resources efficiently, avoiding unnecessary replacement of guest supplies.
Energy & Water
Hot water efficiency is under continuous review, including upgrades to plant and circulation, to reduce energy and water waste. Almost all lighting has been changed over to LED, with energy-saving features used across heating and cooling
Food, Beverage & Events
Food and beverage operations put a strong focus on Clare Valley and South Australian produce, including local wines and regional suppliers. The menu showcases regional produce while making the most of ingredients across dishes to reduce waste. The same approach carries through to conferences and events, where disposable items are kept to a minimum, reusable cutlery, crockery and glassware are used wherever practical, and local food and beverage products are prioritised.
Guest & Team Management
Sustainability is built into how the property operates. The team follows set recycling, resource-use and environmental procedures, and bicycles and e-bikes are available through a local hire partnership, giving guests a lower-impact way to explore the region.
Community Support
Clare Country Club is proud to support the local community and the Clare Valley visitor economy. Working with local tourism, food, wine and service businesses helps keep visitor spend within the region, including:
• Partnerships with local wineries, producers and tourism operators to showcase Clare Valley products and experiences
• Support for local events and tourism initiatives
• Donations of accommodation and in-kind support to local charities, clubs and organisations
